How Working From Home Can Be Beneficial for New Parents

March 5, 2024 | Leave a Comment

In recent years, the shift toward remote work has become more prevalent, offering employees the flexibility to manage ed treatment reviews from the comfort of their homes. For new parents, this trend has proven to be a significant blessing, providing a unique set of advantages that cater to the demands of parenthood. Today, we will explore how working from home can particularly benefit new parents in navigating the joys and challenges of raising young children.

  1. Flexible Schedules for Family Prioritization

One of the most significant benefits of working from home is the ability to establish a flexible schedule that aligns with the needs of a growing family. New parents often face unpredictable sleep patterns, feeding schedules, and other demands of caring for an infant or toddler. Working remotely allows parents to create a customized work routine that accommodates these needs without sacrificing professional responsibilities. Whether taking short breaks for diaper changes, feeding sessions, or attending pediatrician appointments, remote work empowers parents to be present for these crucial moments. Flexibility in scheduling ensures that new parents can balance work commitments and family priorities, fostering a supportive and harmonious environment.

  1. Reduced Commute Stress and Increased Quality Time

For new parents, the elimination of a daily commute is a game-changer. The time and energy saved from commuting can be redirected towards valuable moments with the family. Remote work minimizes the stress associated with rush-hour traffic, allowing parents to start and end their workdays more calmly. The additional time spent at home enhances the quality of family life. New parents can savor precious moments with their children, from morning cuddles to bedtime stories, without the time constraints imposed by commuting to and from the office. This improved work-life balance contributes to a more positive and harmonious atmosphere at home.

  1. Enhanced Work-Life Integration

Working from home blurs the traditional lines between professional and personal life, leading to a more integrated approach. New parents can seamlessly weave work tasks into their daily routines, accommodating the ebb and flow of parenting responsibilities. This integrated approach fosters a sense of harmony, allowing parents to switch between work and family roles more fluidly. With the ability to step away from the desk for brief family breaks or participate in parenting duties during the day, new parents experience a higher level of work-life integration. This integration can increase job satisfaction and positively impact mental well-being as parents feel more connected to their careers and their families.

  1. Opportunities for Shared Parenting Responsibilities

Remote work facilitates shared parenting responsibilities between partners. With both parents potentially working from home, they can actively contribute to caregiving duties and share the joys and challenges of raising children. This collaborative approach strengthens the bond between parents and fosters a supportive environment where both partners actively participate in the upbringing of their children. Whether taking turns for meal preparations, sharing childcare duties during working hours, or providing emotional support, the shared experience of working from home can deepen the connection between parents. This shared responsibility contributes to a more equitable distribution of family duties, empowering both partners to thrive in their personal and professional roles.

How We’re Handling Car Insurance for Our Teen College Student

February 15, 2024 | Leave a Comment

Our son didn’t start driving until he was 19. Since he started at a late age, we hoped his insurance wouldn’t be as expensive as if he had started driving at 16. Unfortunately, we were wrong; insuring an inexperienced driver costs a lot regardless of age. Here’s how we’re handling car insurance for our teen college student.

Should He Have His Insurance or Be Insured Under Ours?

Female teen driver behind the wheel

Our first decision was if he should have his car insurance or be insured under our insurance. We already knew we wanted him to pay the car insurance. When the quotes came back, we knew we had to have him on our insurance. To put him on his insurance was almost four times as expensive as putting him on ours.

How Can We Protect Ourselves Financially?

Stacks of coins covered with a folded dollar bill to look like a house.

Our next decision was how to protect ourselves financially if he had an accident. Since he’s under our insurance, if our son had an accident with another vehicle, the victims could sue us. So, we decided to get an umbrella policy. Without a teen driver, the umbrella policy was only $260 a year. Once we added our son to our insurance, our umbrella policy increased to $500 a year. However, this policy provides us with an additional $1 million in protection. Our insurance agent also assured us that if we were to get sued, the insurance company would put their lawyers on the case because they wouldn’t want to pay a million-dollar settlement.

Requirements for Umbrella Insurance

To qualify for umbrella insurance, we had to have our car premiums at a certain level. We could not have PL/PD on the 19-year-old vehicle our son drives. Fortunately, we already have insurance on all our cars and our home at the appropriate level.

Finding Discounts

In addition to putting our son on our insurance, we also looked for other discounts. We’re insured with State Farm, and they had several more discounts we could utilize:

Multiple Line

Two cars under a shade tree.

We got a multi-line discount on all our policies because we have several cars and our home insurance through State Farm.

Good Student

Our son maintains a 3.6 GPA at college, so he qualifies for a good student discount. Every semester, he must submit his report card to verify he’s maintaining his GPA.

Drive Safe and Save

He took advantage of this discount by downloading the app on his phone and installing a beacon in his car. This records data on how he drives, and he gets a discount for safe driving. (If the driver’s driving does not warrant a discount, they are not penalized. However, they don’t get the discount.)

In addition, State Farm had an online course that new drivers take to save even more. My son took that course.

Final Thoughts

Car insurance for a new teen driver is expensive. However, we’ve found a way to make it affordable thanks to putting our son on our insurance and utilizing multiple discounts. In addition, while we pay for the umbrella insurance, our son pays for his insurance, which incentivizes safe driving. And his policy will drop significantly once he gets through three years of driving with no accidents. Only two-and-a-half more years to go!

Decoding the 11 Most Confusing Phrases in American English

February 2, 2024 | Leave a Comment

The English language is an intricate maze of words and phrases, and American English adds a unique layer of complexity with its array of idiomatic expressions. Some of these phrases are so perplexing that they leave even native speakers scratching their heads. We will embark on a journey to decoding the 11 most confusing phrases in American English phrases that you won’t believe actually exist.

1. Bite the Bullet

“Bite the bullet” is an idiom that means to endure a painful or otherwise unpleasant situation that is seen as unavoidable. The phrase is believed to have its origins in the battlefield, where injured soldiers had to bite on a bullet during surgical procedures without anesthesia to cope with the pain.

In modern usage, it symbolizes the act of facing up to a difficult or unpleasant task and enduring it with fortitude. This expression is often used to convey the idea of bravely or stoically confronting a challenging situation, rather than avoiding it. “Bite the bullet” captures the essence of human resilience and the capacity to endure hardship with courage and determination.

2. Break a Leg

“Break a leg” is an idiom commonly used in the performing arts as a way of wishing an actor good luck in an ironic manner. Stemming from a superstitious belief that directly wishing someone good luck would actually bring bad luck, this phrase takes an opposite approach.

The saying has become a theatrical tradition, often heard backstage before a performance, embodying a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among performers.

Its usage extends beyond the theater, becoming a colloquial way of wishing anyone luck in an upcoming endeavor, particularly when facing a challenging or nerve-wracking task. “Break a leg” reflects the unique blend of superstition, humor, and culture that characterizes the world of performance and artistic expression.

3. Hit the Sack

“Hit the sack” is a colloquial expression commonly used to indicate going to bed or starting the process of falling asleep. The phrase originates from a time when mattresses were often sacks filled with straw or other soft materials, making the action of “hitting” the sack a final step before lying down to sleep.

It’s frequently used to convey a sense of weariness or the need to rest after a long day or exhausting activity. The saying encapsulates the universal human experience of seeking rest and the comfort of one’s bed at the end of the day. In contemporary usage, “hit the sack” remains a casual and relatable way of saying that one is ready to end the day and retreat to the comfort of sleep.

4. Piece of Cake

The saying “piece of cake” is a popular idiom used to describe a task or activity that is very easy to accomplish. Originating from the 1930s, it equates the simplicity and pleasure of eating a piece of cake to effortlessly completing a certain job or challenge.

This expression is often employed to convey confidence in one’s ability to achieve a goal without much effort or to reassure others of the ease of a task. It highlights the human tendency to compare complex activities to simpler, more enjoyable experiences to make them seem less daunting.

In everyday language, “piece of cake” serves as a lighthearted and optimistic way of looking at potentially challenging situations.

5. Let the Cat out of the Bag

“Let the cat out of the bag” is an idiom that refers to revealing a secret or disclosing information that was supposed to be kept hidden.

The phrase is believed to have its origins in medieval markets, where unscrupulous vendors would trick buyers by substituting a cat for a pig in a bag. When the cat was let out, the deceit was revealed, much like when a secret is exposed in modern usage.

This expression captures the moment of surprise and the unintended consequences of revealing something confidential. In contemporary usage, it often carries a sense of accidental disclosure, highlighting the difficulty of keeping certain information concealed.

6. Spill the Beans

“Spill the beans” is an idiomatic expression used to describe the act of revealing secret or confidential information, often unintentionally.

The origin of this phrase is somewhat unclear, but it is thought to date back to ancient Greece, where beans were used in voting and spilling them could inadvertently reveal a vote or secret decision. In modern usage, it typically implies the disclosure of information that was meant to be kept under wraps, whether in a personal or professional context.

The saying often conveys a sense of accidental revelation, where someone might divulge a secret without realizing the implications or being fully aware of doing so. “Spill the beans” has become a common phrase in everyday language, capturing the human tendency to reveal more than intended in moments of carelessness or under pressure.

7. Kick the Bucket

“Kick the bucket” is a colloquial and somewhat euphemistic idiom used to refer to the act of dying. The phrase’s origin is unclear, but one theory suggests it may come from the method of slaughtering animals in which a bucket was kicked away to facilitate the process.

In contemporary usage, it often serves to lighten the conversation about death, using humor to deal with a typically somber topic. The expression is widely recognized and used in various cultures, particularly in English-speaking countries, to talk about death in a less direct and more casual way.

Despite its light-hearted tone, “kick the bucket” is usually reserved for informal contexts, as it might be considered inappropriate or insensitive in more serious or solemn discussions about death.

8. The Ball Is in Your Court

The Ball Is in Your Court” is a popular idiom derived from tennis, symbolizing that it’s someone’s turn to take action or make a decision. It places responsibility squarely on the individual, emphasizing that the next move or response in a situation is theirs to choose.

This expression is often used in contexts where a person is given the opportunity to take initiative or assert control over how events will unfold. It highlights the importance of personal agency and the ability to influence outcomes based on one’s decisions and actions.

In both personal and professional settings, this phrase serves as a motivational call to action, encouraging proactive engagement and decision-making.

9. Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk

The proverb “Don’t cry over spilled milk” teaches the valuable lesson of not dwelling on past mistakes or misfortunes that cannot be undone. It encourages a positive outlook, urging individuals to move forward and focus on what can be controlled in the present and future. This phrase serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of life’s inevitable setbacks.

Embodying a practical approach to life’s small disappointments, it suggests that time and energy are better spent on constructive solutions rather than regret. Through its enduring wisdom, this saying continues to resonate across generations, emphasizing the power of maintaining perspective and emotional balance.

10. When Pigs Fly

“When pigs fly” is a popular idiom used to express skepticism or disbelief in the likelihood of a particular event or scenario occurring. The phrase conjures an image of an impossible feat – pigs, naturally unable to fly, taking to the air – to emphasize the improbability of the situation in question.

It’s often employed humorously to respond to outlandish claims or overly optimistic plans, highlighting their unrealistic nature. This saying is a vivid example of hyperbole in language, using absurdity to make a point about the unlikelihood of an event.

Despite its playful tone, “when pigs fly” effectively communicates a serious level of doubt about the feasibility or reality of a given situation.

11. A Penny for Your Thoughts

The idiom “a penny for your thoughts” is a charming invitation to share one’s inner musings, often used in moments of reflective silence.

Historically, this phrase symbolizes the modest value of a penny compared to the priceless nature of personal thoughts and feelings. In conversation, it serves as a gentle nudge, encouraging someone to open up about what’s preoccupying their mind.

This expression highlights the human connection, valuing the sharing of ideas and emotions over material wealth. As a cultural artifact, it reminds us that sometimes, the simplest gestures of interest in another’s thoughts can forge deeper understanding and empathy.

Home Upgrades and Repairs to Prioritize on a Budget

February 1, 2024 | Leave a Comment

When you have a list of home repairs for your family home and a budget to maintain, you must prioritize the list of things to do and determine the best based on safety, cost, and efficiency in your daily lives. With so many Americans spending at least 90% of their life inside, according to the American Lung Association, this space must be comfortable and safe. Below are some of the most efficient home upgrades to remember when working on a budget.

Upgrade To Plantation Shutters

Quality blinds are important for weather maintenance, security, and privacy for your family. With plantation blinds, you can achieve all of these goals. According to Bob Vila,  a renowned home improvement advice platform, the return on investment of these blinds is around 75%, so you can expect to get back most of what you put into them. This is one of the higher-priority upgrades for your home, especially if you live in a congested neighborhood. These blinds come in customizable colors and sizes to fit all the windows in your home. If you can’t purchase them all at once, they can be purchased alone with each check until the entire house is replaced.

Vinyl Repair

In the event of a storm with wind, rain, or hail, you could find that your siding is damaged and needs to be repaired. Siding is essential to the quality of your home because it adds a layer of protection from moisture and other elemental features. Depending on the damage done to the home, you can expect to pay between $200 and $1100 for the siding repairs by a team of professionals, according to HomeGuide. If your siding is not fixed, it could also bring down your overall property value on the home, which isn’t a good look for your family if you go to sell.

Update Flooring

Many homes that once carried carpet are starting to see it be ripped out and replaced with floor planks. With a family and pets, vinyl, tile, and even laminate flooring are better options and are easier to clean. The problem is that buying a bunch of flooring in one sitting can damage your budget. If you find flooring with a lot of stock, try buying a few boxes each paycheck until you have enough to cover the rooms and maintain your budget.

Add Some New Paint

Believe it or not, painting is one of the more budget-friendly options for your home. It can be done as a family; just get enough tools to keep the paint from getting onto the furniture and the flooring. You can make a project out of it. When you paint, however, ensure you get the right paint for indoor walls and exterior paint for the outside. You can paint to match a theme going through your home, or just use it to brighten up the space and make smaller rooms feel much larger.

Gutter Repair

One of the worst things you can do to your structure and roof is forget the gutters. Not only do they need to be cleaned out at least twice a year, but gutters can get weak and break down over time. If your gutters are not draining properly, even when cleaned, you need to take this minor repair and factor it into the family repair budget. Leaving it could cause much more damage that is a lot more expensive a year or two down the road.

Take Advantage Of These Options

Even when it seems like you may not have enough money to do the repairs you want, there are some minor repairs that you need to see before you can move forward with larger projects or even put them off from being needed any time soon. These repairs are great ways to keep you busy and keep you from breaking your budget on projects.

Ways to Improve Your Child’s Health in the New Year

January 24, 2024 | Leave a Comment

As a parent, you need to model healthy habits so your kids can copy your practices and grow into healthy adults. Starting a new year is a great time to bring back the focus on setting goals to improve your child’s health and that of your whole family. Read on to discover ways you can do that.

1. Eat Healthy Family Meals Together

Eating a family meal together helps children develop healthy eating habits. The meal becomes a time for the family to reconnect with each other and discuss all that happened at school and work during the day. This family tradition helps to improve family relationships and promote healthy eating habits that teach your kids to love nutritious food. Cooking the family meal doesn’t have to be burdensome. It can become an activity done together. Healthy recipes are designed to feed four to five people, which is the perfect amount for a family meal. Make this year the year when the shared family meal becomes a priority in your household.

2. Spend Time in the Great Outdoors

Being active with your children is a great way for families to spend time together. It will make your children more likely to ditch their electronic devices and have fun with mom and dad. You can do any activity that takes you out of the house, like playing soccer, riding bikes, or any other activity your children enjoy. If you don’t like playing sports, take your children for a nature walk or hike. Hiking together improves physical, mental, and relationship health, as found by research done by the National Park Service. If you’ve never hiked before, this year, as part of your goal to improve your child’s health, is the time to get off the couch and take your children walking in nature.

3. Consider Child Therapists

If your family is going through challenges in 2023, consider how the upheaval is affecting your child’s mental health. They may need more emotional support or someone to talk to about their feelings. At least one in five children (age 13-18) has or will develop a mental illness during their life.

This year, to ensure your child is not suffering in silence, pay attention to signs that they are struggling with depression, anxiety, or anger. They may not be able to cope with these feelings alone and may need additional help from a child therapist.

4. Eat More Veggies (But Avoid Harmful Diet Culture)

Keeping a healthy weight is a big part of overall health for children and adults. It’s easy to take dieting to the extreme. Boston Medical found that about 45 million Americans diet each year. Young girls are particularly vulnerable to falling into the diet culture as they can become victims of peer pressure to conform to the unattainable standards of beauty.

Getting your children to eat more vegetables at meals is a great way to ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need for growth while maintaining a healthy weight. The American Heart Association recommends that kids in grades K-5 eat at least one cup of fruit and vegetables daily.

5. Keep Soda and Energy Drinks Out of the House

As we said in the beginning, children copy adults. So, if you regularly drink sodas, they will also want to drink them. As nice as soda tastes, commercially produced soft and energy drinks are extremely damaging to your physical and dental health. Soft drinks contain a large amount of sugar, which causes havoc with your body systems, and the dietary acids present in soft drinks are a major contributing factor to dental erosion. The best way to ensure your children do not drink these sugary drinks is not to buy them. Keep them out of your home.

These are the five ways we recommend you use to improve your child’s health this year. Parenting is a big responsibility, and you need to take it seriously. However, do not forget to have fun along the way. Happy children are healthy children and grow up into well-adjusted adults.

How To Teach a Child To Count Money

January 22, 2024 | Leave a Comment

Teach a Child to Count Money

Counting money is one of the most foundational skills children must learn. Counting and making change are critical skills that many entry-level jobs require. When you apply the following lessons on how to teach a child to count money, you challenge his or her mind to grow in other ways, too.

To give you a thorough array of options on teaching counting skills, I sought out advice from experienced educators and parents. Here are my findings.

How to Teach a Child to Count Money

Create a Play Store

Parents who have taught their children the basics of money said one of the best ways to do so was to set up a play store. Together with their child, they created a fake shop with household items or toys listed for sale. Use a sticky note to indicate the price of each item, then give your child change, and open the shop for business.

Depending on your child’s age, you can vary the degree of difficulty. For example, for a 3-year-old, you could say, “This costs one quarter,” and teach her to identify that coin. For older children, you can pay with a dollar bill and walk them through making change.  Don’t forget to also teach them how to count change back to the “customer.”

Teach Them to Count by Fives and Tens

Teach Kids to Count Money
Photo by Katie Harp on Unsplash

“Kids need to have a good understanding of place value and number sense before they count money,” says a third-grade teacher with I spoke via Facebook. “Start with one coin, and teach them how to count it and how many it takes to make a dollar.”

She goes on to describe a great money game involving two dice. Give the child as many pennies as the number he or she rolled. Have the child then exchange it for the highest value possible.

For example, if the child rolls a ten he or she can trade in pennies for a dime.

In addition to teach your child how to count money, when you teach them to count by fives and tens, you’re teaching them the beginning stages of multiplication.

Let Them See Real Transactions

Many people have had great success with giving their children real world experience.

Here are several examples:

Earn Money Through Chores

Help them understand that “work = pay,” and help them count their earnings. If there’s something they want to buy, help them estimate the cost.

Lead by Example

Allow your child to watch you pay for something in cash. This will help him see how money works and how it requires lots of it to pay for his needs and wants.

Study the History of Real Money Together

Hand your child the coins you received in change that day and quiz her on some coin facts. Not only can learning to count money teach your children better math skills, but you can also create an impromptu history lesson. For example, did you know that the nickel used to be called a “half dime” up until 1883? Half dimes were made of silver which became scarce during the Civil War. After that, they were made of copper and nickel, and they finally were made and referred to entirely of nickel in the 1880s. Click here for more U.S. coin facts.

Final Thoughts

The overall theme of how to teach a child to count money is YOUR involvement. Set aside time to sit at the table and talk about how many nickels are in a quarter or how many pennies are in a dollar. Talk about how much money you earned at your first job or something you saved up for, like a bicycle. That will help your child apply what he or she has learned.

How did you learn to count money? In school? At home?

Parenting is a journey filled with love, laughter, and the occasional facepalm moment. As adorable as kids can be, their innocent actions sometimes lead to unexpected expenses. In this article, we’ll explore 18 such ‘stupid’ things kids do that end up costing their parents money, while also delving into how these moments can turn into valuable life lessons.

1. The Art Attack on Walls

drawing on the wall

Children are natural-born artists, but their choice of canvas – your freshly painted walls – can be costly. Whether it’s crayon masterpieces or marker murals, these artistic expressions can lead to repainting costs or professional cleaning bills. Encourage creativity but guide them towards paper or digital art platforms.

2. Tech Troubles: Phones and Tablets Swimming Lessons

Kids and technology have a complicated relationship. When your phone or tablet takes an accidental dive into the bath or a bowl of water, it can mean expensive repairs or replacements. Investing in waterproof cases or setting clear rules around technology in ‘wet zones’ can save a lot of money.

3. The Mystery of the Missing Keys

Missing Car Keys

Ever been late because your car keys decided to go on an adventure, courtesy of your little one? Replacing modern car keys can be surprisingly expensive, not to mention the potential cost of being late to work. A designated spot for keys can keep them out of reach from curious hands.

4. The Toilet Paper Experiment

playing in toilet paper

To a child, the toilet is a fascinating vortex where things disappear. From toys to entire rolls of toilet paper, these experiments can lead to plumbing disasters. Teaching kids about what should and shouldn’t go down the toilet is crucial.

5. DIY Haircuts: A Snip Too Far

DIY Haircut

DIY haircuts by kids are a recipe for an emergency trip to the salon. These adventurous trims can often result in uneven bangs or bald patches, leading to professional haircut costs to fix the self-styled ‘do. Keeping scissors out of reach and explaining their proper use is essential.

6. Food Fiascos in Electronics

Food Fiasco

Crumbs in keyboards, juice on game consoles – kids often don’t realize that food and electronics don’t mix. Cleaning or repairing these devices can be pricey. Teaching kids about respecting electronics and keeping food away from them is a lesson in responsibility.

7. Unplanned Art Supplies Shopping

Unplanned Art Supplies

When kids decide to use your makeup as their art supplies, it’s not just the mess that’s a problem. High-end makeup isn’t cheap, and replacing it can hurt your wallet. Secure your cosmetics and provide kids with child-friendly art supplies.

8. The Great Indoors: Broken Windows and Decor

broken window

Playing ball inside the house is a classic recipe for disaster. Broken windows and damaged decor can lead to significant repair costs. Encouraging outdoor play or designating safe indoor play areas can prevent these accidents.

9. Pet Project Mishaps

Kids love to experiment, and sometimes pets become part of these experiments, leading to vet bills. Teaching children to respect and care for animals is a vital part of their development.

10. Garden Misadventures: Trampled Flowers and Veggies

Your garden might be your pride and joy, but to kids, it’s a jungle to explore. Trampled plants and uprooted veggies can mean a loss of time and money invested. Involve kids in gardening to teach them the value of nurturing nature.

11. The Curious Case of Overloaded Washing Machines

An overloaded washing machine can break down, leading to costly repairs. Teaching kids about laundry basics can prevent such mishaps and instill responsibility.

12. Accidental Online Purchases

With just a few clicks, kids can accidentally make purchases online. Setting up parental controls and monitoring their internet usage can prevent these surprise expenses.

13. Water Wastage Woes

Leaving taps running or playing with water can lead to high utility bills. Educating kids about water conservation is crucial in today’s environmentally conscious world.

14. Lost or Broken Glasses

17. The Forgotten Lunch

18. The Sticky Fingers Phase

January 9, 2024 | Leave a Comment

Dealing with an addiction can be extremely challenging. In many instances, addiction is life-altering and can change the entire course of your journey. If you are working through facing an addiction, understanding how it can affect your family dynamic and what to do to preserve your relationships is essential.

1. Your Relationships May Change

Unfortunately, addiction to alcohol and any other substance may also have adverse effects on the relationships you have with family members, co-workers, and even your closest friends. An increase in tension and stress in the household is not uncommon when someone is struggling with an addiction to alcohol or any other mind-altering substance. Increased irritability, anxiety, and frustration can also contribute to tensions between those you know and love.

Finding the help you need can be vital to ensuring your ability to get your life back on track. It is thought that around 34 or every 35 alcoholics never seek help to treat their addictions, which can keep them in a perpetual cycle of use and abuse. The right inpatient, outpatient, or intensive outpatient program (IOP) can help you get your life back without feeling caught up in the crutches of addiction.

2. A DUI Can Be Life-Changing

In 2020, there were more than 508,000 arrests in the state of Florida alone, according to the Florida Uniform Crime Reports. Addictions can often lead to DUIs, which can be life-changing and life-altering, even if you do not have a criminal record to your name. In addition to hefty fines that can cost upward of $10,000, a single DUI can result in the loss of your license and, in some cases, jail time, depending on the circumstances of your case.

3. You May Lose Your License

Investing in a vehicle is one of the most common investments individuals make around the world. In 2022, it was projected that the vehicle manufacturer, Audi, would generate approximately $8.68 billion by the end of the year. However, dealing with addiction can lead to the loss of your license, especially when you receive a DUI. This can impact your family dynamic immediately, especially if you require transportation to work and to make a living each day.

4. Broken Trust

Unfortunately, addiction can affect the dynamic of your relationships by contributing to broken trust. When an addiction spirals out of control, it is not uncommon for an individual to begin lying, stealing, or deceiving others to obtain their preferred drug of choice. If issues such as lying begin to occur within the family, it can be difficult to rebuild and repair the lost trust in the future.

5. Isolation

Addiction can be extremely isolating, especially if you do not know who to turn to and where to go for the help you need. When a loved one is struggling with addiction, isolating themselves may be common to avoid confrontations or facing their behaviors head-on. If you or someone you know is struggling with any form of addiction, it is imperative to create a loving support group to provide the emotional and mental support necessary for recovery.

6. Neglect of Responsibilities

Neglecting responsibilities is often a tell-tale sign of a serious addiction. When someone begins neglecting serious responsibilities, such as their job, taking care of their children, or cleaning their home, they are likely struggling with an underlying issue, such as a debilitating addiction. Knowing the signs of addiction can help identify when a loved one needs help.

Understanding the seriousness of a potential addiction in the family is crucial whenever there is an issue with someone you know or love, including yourself. Knowing how addiction can negatively impact your life and the surrounding lives can help you remain as aware as possible of your circumstances, especially if you are struggling at the time. When you know how addiction may impact your relationships with those you love the most, you can take the steps necessary to make positive and healthy changes for your future.

Great Reasons Everyone in Your Family Should Have AAA

January 3, 2024 | Leave a Comment

The organization American Automobile Association, better known as AAA and called Triple A, has long provided top-notch roadside assistance. The collective of regional auto clubs offers many more services for its annual fee. It’s this amalgam of services that makes an AAA membership an asset for every family.

Road Service

AAA’s 24-hour road service provides a range of services, including changing flat tires and jump-starting vehicles with dead batteries. The service also provides advice and educational materials on automotive care. The organization recommends creating an automotive repair account in which you deposit $50 each month to pay for routine vehicle maintenance. This service can easily repay the AAA member for the $49 annual fee, but many other services come with the membership.

Car Rental Discounts

When your vehicle needs service, AAA’s road service tows it to the garage for you, whether you’re like the 75% of Americans who take their vehicles to independent auto repair shops or you’re among the 25% who take it to a dealership for service. A second benefit keeps you moving because AAA also provides Hertz car rental discounts. Even if you drive across the border into Canada, AAA provides auto rental discounts, so you can keep moving while your vehicle undergoes repairs.

Trip-Planning Services

AAA offers a trip-planning service that provides up-to-date information on road closures, route planning help, hotel and motel reservations, and travel guides. Members also get access to a travel agency that books tours, makes reservations, and helps members obtain international driving permits. This service also provides discounts for off-airport parking and auto rentals.

AAA Insurance Agency

The diverse organization also includes an insurance agency with licensed professional insurance counselors. AAA works with a range of insurers to provide competitive rates for its members. Those rates include an auto insurance discount for its members and a personal accident insurance policy that comes with membership. AAA offers auto and recreational vehicles, all forms of home (homeowners, condo, mobile home, and renters), and flood insurance.

Travel Protections

The auto club provides travel protection for its members, including reimbursement of legal fees if the member gets ticketed or arrested for an automotive-related offense. Membership also includes a bond service certificate valued at $1,000. By phoning the local AAA office, members may be eligible for a $5,000 certificate, according to AAA.

Other Travel-Related Services

AAA offers a plethora of travel-related services, including hotel and motel discounts, attraction discounts, and traveler’s cheques. The auto club takes color passport photos at discounted prices, too. When you drive your vehicle, discourage theft by displaying your AAA membership decal that informs everyone of the AAA $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a thief of a member’s vehicle.

Vehicle Purchase and Maintenance Assistance

AAA pre-negotiates auto prices at various dealerships, which members can access using the auto club’s car-buying service. It also provides auto financing, so members can obtain low-interest rate loans. Even caring for your vehicle becomes easier with AAA mechanical repair agreements. According to the Transmission Repair Cost Guide, a vehicle needs transmission repairs between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, and the mechanical repair agreements help you afford these expensive repairs.

AAA Provides Value

For $49 annually, an AAA membership provides a lot of value. Because the auto club offers so many services, every family typically finds at least one membership benefit that they use regularly. While one family member’s name goes on the membership card, every person in the household can use the benefits. When kids graduate high school, and go to college or move out and take a job, provide them with their own AAA membership, so they continue to enjoy its protection and services.

14 Profitable Stay-at-Home Mom Jobs Online (That Are Worth Your Time)

December 14, 2023 | Leave a Comment

stay-at-home mom jobs onlineIf you dream of staying home with your kids and want to work from home, then it’s likely your finances will make a significant change. That’s only natural, but planning ahead as you search for stay-at-home mom jobs online can be crucial to a successful transition.

I made that switch in 2015, launching my own part-time freelance writing business. I have two young children under my care and work 12 to 15 hours a week earning $1,500 to $2,500 per month. None of this just happened, so the last thing you’ll hear from me is that it’ll be easy.

But if your goal is to stay home, and your whole family is willing to put in the sacrifices and commitment, then this dream can become a reality.

14 Cash-Generating Stay-at-Home Mom Jobs Online

I write in the personal finance and work-at-home mom niches multiple times each week, so I’ve got an ongoing list of places that pay you to work at home.

You’re likely tired of hearing bloggers promise quick six-figure success as a work-at-home mom because that’s simply not the norm. I’m also not going to talk about taking surveys because those require large quantities of time and typically generate a few gift cards each month.

Where to begin?

You may need to start with something in your field of interest that doesn’t generate the ultimate income you’d like. Just getting your foot in the door and starting up that experience is so important.

Let’s take a look at these job opportunities for SAHMs:

Remote work for companies

Every year, Forbes publishes a top 100-list of companies offering remote jobs. To ensure they bring you the most valuable information, they study the current marketplace, job trends, and validity of these companies. If your skills lie in one of these industries, check out Forbes’ list of potential remote jobs:

  • Computer and Information Technology
  • Medical and Health
  • Government
  • Finance
  • Customer Service
  • Education
  • Training
  • Sales

A lot of these jobs can make up to $60,000 salary per year – which a lot of people consider the minimum needed for a healthy fulfilling life.

Virtual Assistant

If you have a knack for organization and administrative duties, then you’ve got the potential to make serious cash as a virtual assistant. Seriously, this is a stay-at-home mom’s bread and butter. So many online entrepreneurs have irons in the fire and need help running the many details of their business. Some responsibilities for a virtual assistant might include:

  • Answering emails
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Managing invoices
  • Managing blog content
  • Sharing content on social media
  • Designing graphics

What can you earn? According to Payscale.com, virtual assistants earn anywhere from $10 to $28 per hour. Your hours are very flexible and the work is remote, so you can conduct all of your business from the comfort of your home.

Alternate VA Jobs

  • Social Media Manager – Average annual salary according to Payscale.com: $47,472.
  • Graphic Designer – Average annual salary according to Payscale.com: $41,764.

Freelance Writer

Got a gift with words? Hundreds of sites hire writers to create relatable and informative content for their blogs. For example, here are 28 parenting magazines and blogs that pay contributors. If you’re a mom, then take a look at what’s being published on those sites and see if something inspires you to tell your own story.

Another great way to get started is by Googling your field of interest + “write for us.” Some writing niches include:

  • Nutrition
  • Adoption
  • Personal Finance
  • Organization
  • Marriage
  • Travel
  • Fashion

What can you earn? When I started my freelance writing business in 2015, I earned peanuts while I learned the ropes. That changed as my skills and quality of writing improved. According to Payscale.com, most writers earn $10 to $58 per hour. I speak from experience when I say that pay scale is totally accurate.

Alternate Writing Jobs

  • Proofreader – $11 to $30 per hour
  • Transcriber – $9 – $25 per hour
  • Blogger – You won’t likely generate an income with your blog right away. But some very profitable ways to monetize are: Ads, affiliate sales, sponsored posts, and selling your own products. There several good instructions for how to get started – one good site to read is here.

One of the most profitable affiliate niches is in online trading, you can easily become an affiliate by visiting a broker’s site like this one.

Teach via Video

Do you have a specific skill you can teach to others, like how to sing? Perhaps you’d like to educate others in your area of work experience like how to file your taxes, become a photographer, or give a speech.

For example, one of my daughter’s favorite things to do is draw. When she was three and couldn’t draw more than a stick figure, we found a YouTube channel called “Art for Kids Hub” where easy-to-follow drawing tutorials are published every day.

By the end of my daughter’s first lesson, she’d drawn her very first robot. Since then, she’s filled a notebook, cover to cover, with drawings from this YouTube channel.

Watch the tutorial: How to Draw a Cartoon Robot

What can you earn? There is no definitive wage for educational videos. It’s all about creating your brand and giving your audience fantastic content every time. For example, Art for Kids Hub has more than 600,000 subscribers and receives millions of views on its tutorials. YouTube pays ad revenue per 1,000 clicks. Some YouTube educators make millions with their channels. Others break even. It’s all about getting eyes on your videos.

Alternate Online Teaching Jobs

  • Create a course – Selling a course on your website or Udemy.com can become a great passive income. Some courses are $10 and some are in the hundreds.
  • Become a coach – Teach people one-on-one in your field of expertise. For example, life coaches can earn anywhere from $11 to $120 per hour according to Payscale.com.

Online Shop Owner

Can you create a product and sell it online? Etsy and Shopify are two great platforms for this. Product ideas include:

  • Jewelry (earrings for men, men’s leather bracelets)
  • Customized T-shirts
  • Hand-Crafted Decor
  • Calligraphy
  • Baby/Kids Accessories

What can you earn? The income scale is difficult to measure due to the vast array of business possibilities. Here is one company that earns $70,000 per month selling on Etsy. You’ll need to know how much time it takes to create each product and to price them accordingly. Online marketing plays a huge role here, too. It’s likely a competitive market.

Flipper for online garage sales

Online pickers are getting better and better at finding hidden gems in garage sales, on eBay, and on social media. If you can spruce up a worn down cabinet or reupholster a chair, you may be able to upsell those items for a nice profit.

What can you earn? One woman I interviewed said she bought some old clay bowls in a Facebook buy, sell, and trade group. She purchased them for $0.50 to $1, then cleaned them up and added a fresh coat of paint. They sold for $15 to $20 each.

Direct sales/MLM online

If there is a product you believe in and want to become a consultant from home, then online is the ideal marketplace for you. Products like LuLaRoe, Norwex, or Young Living sell best through the power of word of mouth. Where is everybody talking these days? Facebook.

One word of caution: This is a heavily saturated marketplace. Don’t annoy your friends. If you believe in your product, then get out there and talk your heart out, but do so in a tasteful and non-aggressive way when it’s very likely your friends have been “pitched to” by others from the same company before.

What can you earn? Each company will tell you the earning potential for contributors. That information is not disclosed online. There is typically an upfront investment to acquire the merchandise, then a set timeframe in which you need to sell a certain amount of product. Bonuses may be issued if you exceed these goals.

What’s my next step?

1. Find like-minded stay-at-home moms in the same fields of interest. Getting real-life feedback on what these jobs are like is crucial to understanding how you’ll build your business.

For example, if you want to blog, join blogging groups on Facebook. If you want to sell LuLaRoe, pick a consultant’s brain. Follow websites or social media celebrities that talk about the topic you’re interested in.

2. Financially prepare for this transition. The #1 reason I was able to launch an at-home business was because of the financial steps my husband and I took before my business launched. How could I run a business when we couldn’t run our budget? How could I quit my full-time job while I spent the time it took to develop my career at home when we owed thousands of dollars in debt?

Our very imperfect journey had many ups and downs, but we overcame the lion’s share of those financial hurdles. Today, we are debt-free minus the mortgage and comfortably live on my husband’s modest income while we use mine to save for emergencies, traveling, and paying extra on the house.

Your Turn: If you could work from home doing something you enjoy, what would it be? Share with us below!

Here’s How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue

December 6, 2023 | Leave a Comment

Are you preparing for a wedding during this festive season? Finding that perfect venue is key. But it’s no simple task. That’s why taking the time to research different wedding venues will save you time and money. First, when the venue is booked, you don’t have to run around searching for the perfect venue. And if you book it early, you’re likely to pay less. In this blog, we’ve got some valuable tips to help you choose the ideal spot for your big day.

1. Have a Budget

Begin your venue search with your budget. Decide on a comfortable spending limit for the venue itself. If you’re eyeing decor and floral designs, set a separate budget for those. Keep in mind, that some venue costs might not cover everything, such as sound and lighting, so plan for these extras. The golden rule? Keep a close watch on your budget to stay within your limits. Also, it’s smart to plan your wedding well in advance—aim for at least 10 to 12 months ahead of the big day.

2. Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Avoid the pitfall of waiting too long to find your venue. Delaying your search might lead to disappointment as venues can get fully booked, sometimes for the next 12 months. To play it safe, book your venue early. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Find a space that is openly inclusive of everyone. Visit numerous venues, compare prices, and explore what each one offers to find your perfect match. The sooner, the better.

3. Find the Perfect Venue

Your dream wedding venue should match your vision and theme perfectly. Imagine a certain style or vibe in your mind and aim to find a venue that complements it. For instance, if you’re envisioning a traditional wedding, seek a venue that echoes that tradition. If you plan to deck out the venue with specific decorations, ensure the place allows your decor artist to unleash their creativity. If your heart’s set on a pink-themed. wedding, the venue should welcome and support your color experiments. According to Brides.com, allot 7% of your overall wedding budget to flowers. Talk to your wedding planner about this. Let your venue be the canvas for your dream aesthetic.

4. The Guest List

Before settling on a venue, it’s crucial to have a clear idea of your guest count. If you’re anticipating 250 attendees but the venue can only accommodate 100, you’ll definitely need a larger space. This is where a guest list comes in handy. Having a list and receiving RSVPs allows you to gauge exactly how many people will be joining, ensuring you choose a venue that comfortably fits all your guests.

5. Hire a Wedding Planner

To snag that dream wedding venue, think about teaming up with a wedding planner. These pros know the venues inside out, possibly better than you do. They not only assist in picking the perfect spot but also guide you on how to design your wedding. Medium says guests remember just 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read, but a whopping 80% of what they see. That’s why nailing the right impression at your wedding is so crucial.

Your wedding day is incredibly special, and that’s why careful planning is crucial. Remember, you don’t have to tackle everything solo. Involving your family can be invaluable. They might offer great tips on finding the ideal venue and give you insights into what to expect in terms of pricing. It’s a team effort to make your day as perfect as can be. Once you find a venue that fits your budget and theme, secure it right away. Don’t wait until you compare it with other venues. A few days later, that venue might not be available.
